While we generally believe we need to head “up north” with our families for that quintessential Michigan outdoor experience, there are actually some truly beautiful campgrounds available within a sixty mile drive of Detroit. Rustic and unplugged? Modern? Family friendly? Fun-filled? We’ve got you covered with our list of these conveniently located campgrounds.
Algonac State Park
Marine City
Algonac State Park is a 1,550 acre park with amazing aneminites and views that includes two modern campgrounds. Stay at the Riverfront Campground for waterfront views of the St. Clair River, or the Wagon Wheel Campground – which boasts a more “woodsy” feel.
Brighton Recreation Area
Howell
Boasting multiple trails for uses that include equestrial, mountain biking, and hiking, Brighton Recreation Area also has multiple campsites available ranging from modern to rustic. They also have a small handful of rustic cabins available to rent for both large and small groups.
Auburn Hills/Holly KOA
Holly
A great option for families, this KOA location offers both RV, cabin, and tent camping. There’s plenty here for all ages (pup and human!) to enjoy including a pool, dog park, mini golf, outdoor bowling, playground,and a rock wall!
Camp Dearborn

Whether you’re looking for a cabin, or a rustic or electric campsite for your tent or RV – Camp Dearborn has it all. They also offer organized activities such as arts & crafts, hikes, campfire sing-a-longs, and a nightly open-air dance.
Clearwater Campground

A family owned campground conveniently located in Oakland County, Clearwater Campground has made substantial efforts to bring those of us “under the bridge” a U.P. experience. Offering cabins and both rusic and full-hookup sites, there’s also a 35 acre lake and plenty of trails to explore. Boat rentals are also available.
Port Huron KOA
Kimball
Another fun-filled KOA with multiple sites and lodging options! This location in Port Huron offers an ice cream parlor, sports court, resort-style pools, movie theater, and plenty of other outdoor activities to enjoy. Don’t miss their annual Halloween festivities!

Offering peaceful rustic, electric, and full-hookup sites, as well as cabins, this campground also boasts river access and miles or hiking and mountain bike trails.
Taylor’s Beach Campground
