Home entryways come in all shapes and sizes and, although not always considered a main living space, are one of the most important areas in your home as they can set the mood the moment you walk through the front door. Decorating this area for these reasons alone can be daunting. In addition, an entryway can become easily cluttered with items such as keys and shoes (so many shoes!). To help style this space so it represents your aesthetic and brings you peace by remaining clutter free, we’ve put together some ideas on how to best style an entryway while also keeping function in mind.
Table Talk
Placing a table in your entryway is the perfect way to anchor the space. It provides both an introduction to your home’s personality, and the ability for you to add storage and decor. While choosing a table, consider the size and layout of your space as well as your storage needs. Console tables are always a great option for any size area, but if you have a smaller space a well-placed floating shelf or bench are great options. For larger entryways, buffet tables can add a lot of wow factor.
If there’s space available under whatever piece you choose, consider placing functional decor – such wicker baskets – underneath. This can provide additional “hiding places” for items that can add clutter when placed at or near the front door on their own, such as shoes or dog leashes.
Add a rug
Defining your entryway with a rug can help it feel like it’s its own area worthy of attention. If you’re concerned about high traffic, consider the material of the rug. Generally some of the more durable and/or easiest-to-clean materials for high-traffic areas are wool, nylon, cotton, and rugs made of natural fibers.

Let There Be Light
Don’t forget about lighting! From above, you want to choose a statement fixture that illuminates and accentuates your space. For low to standard height ceilings, a flush or semi-flush mount light fixture is a great option. For higher ceilings, consider filling the space and going grand with a chandelier that reflects your home’s overall style. Be sure to measure well to ensure your light doesn’t impede the door from fully opening.
To add warmth to the space in the evenings, or as a substitution for an overhead light, purchase a table lamp to go on your entryway table.
Wall Decor
With so many options out there, deciding on wall decor can be overwhelming. When in doubt, you can never go wrong with a mirror. Mirrors can reflect light into your entryway and make the area seem larger. There’s also plenty of sizes and styles out there to fit anybody’s wall space and design aesthetic.
If a mirror isn’t right for your entryway, or you have more wall space to fill, a well proportioned gallery wall or a statement art piece are a great way to add a personal touch.
Finishing Touches
When it comes to adding your final touches, the sky’s the limit. Simple pieces such as a catch-all tray for your keys are great additions to an entryway table, and a small houseplant can also add life to your space. If the area allows for it, a coat rack is also a great way to keep the area organized. Want to go bold? Painting the inside of your front door can be an amazing way to add a pop of color.
Ultimately, and most importantly, when choosing your pieces keep in mind that you want this space to be a reflection of you and your home, and for it to bring you peace the moment you walk through your front door.
